Laura Jurd Quartet
This group is Laura's longest running ensemble which have played numerous gigs in and around London, including performances at the London Jazz Festival and the Jazzwise power of 15 festival supporting saxophonist Chris Potter at Ronnie Scotts. Bringing together a variety of influences, the Laura Jurd Quartet are an intriguing, creative outfit featuring fellow improvisers, Elliot Galvin- piano Conor Chaplin- bass and Corrie Dick- drums. Drawing upon original compositions and traditional melodies as a basis for improvisation, this classic quartet line-up fuses elements of European folk, Jazz and Classical traditions, creating a unique and distinctive soundworld.
The Medium Ensemble
This project is so named with the intention of having a small ensemble with an on-going change of instrumentation whilst still incorporating improvisation and classical techniques in the compositions. The most recent collaboration is Laura's project with string quartet, featuring her quartet plus the fantastic Ligeti Quartet. Music specially written for this collaboration can be heard on Laura's soon to be released album 'Landing Ground' which was recording ealier this year. The album also features cellist/improviser Ben Davis. Next in the pipeline is a set of music to be written for 4 singers (SATB) and trumpet.
The Chaos Orchestra
This ensemble was founded by Laura with the intention of showcasing some of the UK's finest young jazz composers and instrumentalists with a highly refreshing, artistic outlook. Something of a secret weapon, this large ensemble took the capital by storm with a stunning debut gig back in February this year. A Chaos Collective associate ensemble, this 18-piece line-up plays contemporary music by critically acclaimed composers such as Mark Lockheart, as well as presenting the compositional talents of band members Laura Jurd, Elliot Galvin and Simon Marsh amongst others. With a passion for new music this hard-hitting, cross-genre big band is reminiscent of the eighties powerhouse Loose Tubes.
Blue - Eyed Hawk
This relatively new band is co-led by each of its members consisting of Laura Jurd - trumpet, Lauren Kinsella - voice, Alex Roth - guitar, Corrie Dick - drums. Taking its name from a Yeats poem the band explore words through free-improvisation as well as exploring material provided by each member of the band. A unique listening experience, the group explores different timbres, intensities and atmospheres, guaranteed to engage and captivate the listener.
Laura Jurd/Elliot Galvin Duo
Whether freely-improvising or loose interpretations of popular/standard songs, this dynamic duo has been developing a strong musical relationship over the past couple of years. The exploration of sound and extended techniques is an integral part of the duo as well as the concept of pure/fluid creativity and improvisation.
